Crystal Lake,San Francisco Posted by Hello

Back in Sunny Singapore

Well, after a gruelling 22 hours of flight I landed in Spore.I duno why I felt like I was gone for ages. The landscape is so radically different that when I came out of Changi airport, it took me a few minutes to orient myself.

Today is probably going to be 'catch up on sleep' day for me.But seems like I have so much lined up to do.Its only morning and I am already feeling tired.

Visit to the Golden City

Basically the background to my trip is that my cousin sister is gettin married so I decided to come here for it and also this way I can catch up with cousins I havent met in ages and the ones I have never met before.

Today morning was sight seeing day!!We drove down to San Fransisco downtown from San Jose.First stop was Stanford University campus. Its 8200 acres of land surrounded by tall majestic mountains. It made NUS and NTU campus look like high school buildings. It campus has this light brown tinge giving it the ancient look. But its no short in advancement of technology.

After Stanford, we drove by Crystal lake. Looking at the beautiful fog covered mountains around and crystal clear blue lake shimmering in the sun, you wouldnt guess,at the bottom of this lake lies the plate fault lines.

We drove on the mountain edges with the Pacific Ocean on our left and I got reminded of "The Great Ocean Road" of Melbourne where I had driven by the Antartic Ocean.I have no words to describe how splendid the ride was and the beauty of the huge waves hitting the rocks on the shore.

Twin Peaks was our next stop, from where we were able to get a better view of the entire ciy of San Francisco. We drove across the Golden gate bridge. It was terribly terribly windy and we were trying to hold on to our things, including my camera which started flying.

We then headed for Lombard street or what is commonly called Crooked street cos the road goes high up like a roller coaster ride and then the winds down like a 'S'.Its just one of those touristy things people do.

We couldnt go any where else because we had to rush home for the 'mehendi ceremony'.
(P.S: Pictures will come later)

Summers in San Francisco

I took the early morning flight and after a gruelling 10 hours of sitting still and trying to sleep in that position, I arrived at Narita airport,Tokyo.I spent my 2 hour stop over walking around because I realised I wont be able to get out of my seat for the next 10 hours!

As we flew over the pacific ocean, the plane shook worse than a broken bus would over a bumpy road!We were holding on for dear life. The ocean, however, looked so calm and unperturbed, beautiful below us, the low hanging clouds looked like cotton candy against a bright blue background.I managed to fall asleep thanks to all the rattling making all parts of my body ache.

I woke up just as we were completing the last hour of flight to SanFrancisco. The transistion was beautiful. The entire sky was white as if it was a neatly laid out bed of pure white cotton. Then slowly as we went forward, the sky started clearing and the blue ocean came into view again and clouds lookin like strips of marshmallows. The blue water changed colour to green and the coastline became visible outlining the land of the majestic green mountains and contrasting deep blue lakes in between. From above, the panaromic view of the city was simply breathtaking. I felt like kicking myself for not having brought my camera.

Well anyways guys, I am in sunny San Francisco now.

Book Tagged...Your It!

Recently,I was book tagged by Ram.C , I decided I needed sometime to actually think about this. Since this post was due, I decided to take sometime off and write it.

I love reading novels. But I am very selective about my authors and I didnt want to put up a post that sounded like I was listing out the books of one particular author only.

Current Reading:

I am reading a book by Robert Ludlum called "The Sigma Protocol". I found out that this was the last book written by him. Although this is only the 2nd book of his that I am reading, I have already taken a liking for the author. This book, is a thriller novel about a secret organisation SIGMA which was set up during WWII.The story seemingly predictable has sudden twists and a complex plot which spans across continents.

Rather than me give you a review, since I myself have not completed the book yet, I found an online review of the book for those you interested to check out.

Recent Readings (in no particular order):

First Among Equals (Jeffery Archer):I never really came round to reading more than 50 pages cos I fell asleep everytime I tried to read the book. But its not the fault of the author.Maybe I shd do justice to it and try reading again.

State of Fear (Micheal Crichton):I was very disappointed because I guess after the previous book of his "Prey" my expectations had soared. But its not a bad book.

Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code(Dan Brown): These books are huge hits, so I am not commenting but if you are interested, you can read Aye Kay's review.

Deception Point(Dan Brown): To be honest, I thought the book was total crap!

Books I read over and again!(in no particular order):
These are my all time favourites. They are not exactly classics, but I have enjoyed the stories or the writing styles so much that when I dont have any new books to read, I dont mind picking them up again. Some of these books I must have read at least twice, some even N number of times in the past 10-12 years.

The Client (John Grisham)
The Street Lawyer (John Grisham)
Jurrasic Park (Micheal Crichton)
Congo (Micheal Crichton)
Airframe (Micheal Crichton)
Prey (Micheal Crichton)-(I read this book 3 times in 3 days, the day I bought it.That is how much I loved it)
The whole Harry Potter collection (J K Rowling)
Malgudi Days (R.K.Narayan)-(Never ceases to amuse me..)
Charlie and the Chocolate fatory (for the less imaginative, there is the movie as well)

Authors whose books I enjoy Reading:

R.K.Narayan : I think his stories are simple yet effective. Short yet captivating, they always leave me feeling inspired. His books can be enjoyed by all and sundry.

Micheal Crichton: Every book of his that I have read has a completely different topic/theme but meticulous, intense background research goes into each book. He takes great effort to be factually correct yet fictiously interesting (if you get what I mean).

John Grisham: His books usually are "about a legal firm" or "about a lawyer".Though slow moving sometimes, his stories deal with different aspects of the our lives and the law.I cant really explain, but I strongly suggest that if you have an interest in legal stories, his books are a execellent reading.

Jeffery Archer:I like his short stories more than his novels.I dont know how I got hooked on to his books, I just did.Its one of those things, you pick up a book, you like what you read and decide to go back to try again.

J.K.Rowling: Yes yes I know, I am also a big Harry Potter Fan! I love her books and I love going to her site for past time reading.

I hope that has been a decent enough review, written in quite a hurry.

The tag passes to the following people: I hope they have not been tagged yet.

We are Moving...

I have been complaining about this so much the past few days that I decided I might as well blog it.

One fine morning last month, my manager calls for a meeting and informs us

"The IT department is moving to a new better equipped building in the East end of Singapore (near the EXPO)."

which translated in my head Basically we are being outsourced to a low cost location in one end of Singapore. We guys dont deserve the fancy city office and will be the first to shelved if needed.'

Starting next week, we are to go to the new office. The worst part is that I live closer to the city and now will have to travel atleast an hour and half to goto office, opposed to half hour. This is the end of waking up later in the morning and still making it to office at a decent time.I will no longer be able to get into the bus and sleep off till my stop comes.I dont even stay near a train station, that means a bus ride tot he train station. Now I need to stand in the train and travel the whole distance.

I cant meet friends for lunch cos most of them work in the city. I cant jus meet up with people in the city after work because I am simply too far away....

With my masters, I will be travelling from the East end to the West end for classes. My dance classes will be in the city side. All of a sudden my life seems to have become a mess..What a disaster!!

Strange Coincidences!

18 years ago, today, this same day I was awaiting the birth of my younger brother. My younger brother who came into the world at 6pm, announcing his arrival by crying his lungs out so loudly I am sure that the hospital building shook in terror.

Last year today, the very same day, I was eagerly awaiting the results of my interview from the company I am working for now.At around evening I got a call from the HR offering me a job!

This year today, exactly a year later, I was eagerly awaiting yet again, but this time for the result of my admission to the masters programme I had applied for.I just checked the website and read that I have been offered admission!

Strange coincidence...?

Revival of the Super Heroes

I am sure many of you would have noticed the string of superhero movies hitting the big screen.

Batman Begins Posted by Hello

Batman Begins takes viewers to the discovery of the origins of the Batman legend. The movie is directed by Christopher Nolan (his other movies include Insomia and Momento) while Christian Bale plays Bruce Wayne.I was a bit surprised to find that none of the villains usually associated with a Batman movie like The Penguin, Two-Face, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Riddler (except The Scarecrow) are going to be in this movie. It is scheduled to release in Singapore on the 15th June.

Batman Begins 2 Posted by Hello

The Fantastic Four are in the limelight on July 8th.The movie is directed by Tim Story. The Fantastic Four is supposed to be the longest running comic book series in history. The Fantastic Four characters include Mr.Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, The Thing and the evil Doctor Doom.It is supposed to be an action packed movie about saving the world.Catch them if you can!

Fantastic Four Posted by Hello

The next eagerly awaited movie "The War of the Worlds" is to be relased on Jun 29th.It is yet another alien movie, the only difference, it is directed by Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise is the star of this movie. It is a remake of a 1953 movie directed by Byron Haskin. The original idea belonged to H.G Wells brought to screen by producer George Pal.The 1953 movie earned itself an Academy Award for Best Special Effects and inspired many including Steven Spielberg. The movie clips look very realistic and very different from "Independence Day"

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Poster Posted by Hello

Last but certainly not the least, my most favourite hero, Charlie!!Yup, for all you chocoholics out there, fret no more, Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is being released in August to tempt your senses and blow you mind away with the most variety of innovative chocolates you would have ever seen on Earth!! The story is about five lucky children, including Charlie, who draw golden tickets from Wonka chocolate bars and win a guided tour of the legendary candy-making factory of Willy Wonka that no outsider has seen in 15 years. I am sure a lot of us are familiar with the characters from the book and the 1971 movie "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory".Who can forget the famous song "Humpha Humpha Humphadi da..." from that movie. My mother tells me that I used to refuse to eat anything unless this movie was played and well I guess it explains my extreme fondness for chocolates.Directed by Tim Burton, Willy Wonka is played by none other than Jhonny Depp, this is one movie definetly worth watching I am sure.

Legos

I was sitting bored in office and decided to run a few errands jus as a break, guess where I ended up?The Lego Creators Show. Its an exhibition cum sale of lego products.

All of a sudden I felt like I had travelled back in time.I forgot about my office and I was happily walking around looking at the exhibition. From the Great Wall of China and Opera House to the Esplanade, everything has been "miniturised" in lego.I saw some real funky creative stuff also. I had built my first dream house with my first lego kit.(Of course when you are 3 they let you build houses with no walls n no roof and its ok!). Every year I would get atleast one small kit as a gift from some uncle or aunt or my parents. My favourite pass time used to be to come up with my own creations of cars and buildings. My lego would be sprawled all over my room and my mom would come screaming into the room to keep them in one place in case my brother accidently put one in his mouth.

I think today especially with kids spending so much time in front of the computer and television, lego gives them the oppurtunity to let their imaginations free and work hands on.On their website they have a lot of "cool creations" done by kids, some of which are really brilliant and very imaginative!

I am sure a lot of us grew up playing with lego.If you are one of those who loves lego, then dont miss this fair at Raffles City Shopping Centre Singapore.

Nail Trouble

I have restricted my nail growth by conveniently biting them off, since the day I can remember. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, a few weeks back, my feminine instincts took charge (yet again) and I finally decided to give up on that dirty habit.

I am now suffering the consequences of vanity! My nails seem to hinder me from wearing my lenses, because I feel like I am puttin 'sharp objects' into my eye. My nails keep gettin caught on the threads of my clothes. It hurts when I close my fist or scratch my head.

What a pain!I wonder how so may women (and men) manage it...

Interesing Thought

I found this on a mail sent to me, thought it was quite interesting way to make a statement!

A man asked his father-in-law, "Many people praised you for a successful marriage. Could you please share with me your secret?" The father-in-law answered in a smile, "Never criticize your wife for her shortcomings or when she does something wrong. Always bear in mind that because of her shortcomings and weaknesses, she could not find a better husband than you."

I Like to Move it Move it...

For those of you who have seen the trailers...You guessed correct I watched Madagascar!!

 Posted by Hello

Its a fun filled movie with a simple story line and entertaining animals who keep you holding your sides the whole time while you struggle to remain on your seat.

Although the ratings given to this movie was not very high, I thought it was worth watching in the cinema.I would have stayed on for another round had it not been late already!

There are supposed to be 4 lead characters, Alex the Lion,Gloria the Hippo,Melman the Giraffe and Marty the Zebra. However, I think credit should be given to the 4 penguins and the lemur King (who speaks with a thick Indian accent). When the song 'I like to Move it' came on, I didnt even realise that I was actually dancing in my seat, till my friend caught hold of me. (The song is still playing in my head!!!)

As far as animation is concerned, I thought it was very tastefully and realistically done.A lot of times I felt I was not watching cartoon characters but real humans dressed like aninals. While watching the waves and the fire I actually thought they shot real fire and water and used high tech animation to merge the pictures.

I am not giving out the story, for those of you who want to know more about each of the characters, click on the link and the website is quite detailed.

Just to add on,everytime Melman spoke, I saw Ross's face!!It was jus too funny!!

A view of Wan Chai

Ouch..

I have heard of the saying 'The price of Vanity is pain', but i still cannot comprehend how people can pierce themselves, that too in all sorts of wierd places.

This is not just among the gals, a lot more guys get various parts (wierd parts) of their bodies pierced.

The most common are ears,I know I got mine pierced at the age of 1.But then who stops at 1 pair, its a trend to have many many ear holes.Nose piercing is also quite popular espcially in India.

A pierced belly button is supposed to be a fashion statement; I have also seen eyebrows rings and tongue stubs. Today I saw a girl with both her cheeks pierced. The first thought that came to my head was "OUCH!!! doesnt it hurt?"

I have never even had the guts to get a 2nd ear hole cos I am so worried about the pain and the infection that might follow.Infact I often tell myself its not worth it.

The things that people do in the name of fashion!

Small Miracles

Off late I have gotten into this habit of reading by the seaside or waterfront.I like to go to the esplanade and sit there and read till the sun sets. Then I just sit and look at the lights, the beautiful lights that add splendour to streets.

This time, is my time.I dont share it with anyone else.I have sat alone sometimes and cried or laughed.I think about all the 'What ifs' of my life. Sometimes I wonder about the future.I know for a fact most of my friends find that I think too much.I think too much and I feel too much.I am very emotional and sometimes the mere thought of something happening affects me even though it hasnt happened.

I decided last year that everytime I felt this way, I was going to do something about it. I started with my trip to Australia, then joined Tap classes, then I started reading actively (once again). These are all feel good techniques I have been using for myself.

When I was told about my trip to HK, I was happy because it would give me an oppurtunity to be away from my usual hectic life. Two weeks seemed like just the right amount of time to spend discovering myself, my capabilities and regain my confidence and yet at the same time not hit the lonliness border.

Thank God for small miracles in life.
