Always My Little Girl

My dad has this habit, everytime he is going through a difficult phase in his business, he will wake up in the middle of the night and be pacing up and down, and everytime anyone asked him why, he would reply "Tension". We are not allowed to talk to dad or say anything to upset him during those times.I only started understanding what tension is after I started working and juggling between dance classes and work and friends and etc etc. With my social life in the dumps and still scrambling for time everyday, I feel I am always running around from one thing to the next.

As I was hurrying around the house one morning, getting ready for work and trying to rush through my breakfast, mom came up to me and said "Slow down, why are you in such a hurry dear?"

"Mom!Please!!Tension!" I replied without even looking up,sounding every bit tensed because I had so much work to do in office and deadlines to meet and I hadnt left home yet.So it was quite an automatic reaction to how I was feeling.

My mom turned and half smiling, half joking said "Tensed?" she laughed "But what could you possibly be tensed about?Little girls dont get tensed."

My head went 'Little Girl?? from which angle??!!!Does she not realise that I am in a serious job in a serious company?'

But it doesnt matter to her where I work or what I do. Even when she calls me in office, her first question invariably is "Kanna (Dear in tamil),Have you had lunch? What did you eat?" And everytime I answer her, I feel so flustered that I actually glance around to make sure none of my colleagues heard it.

But to my mom, not answering that question means she will spend the whole day worrying about "oh my poor daughter hasnt eaten anything all day".

To her, my work , my dance and practically everything else I do in my life does not have so much meaning compared to whether I eat and what I eat and what time I will be back home and whom am I goin out with.Sometimes I wonder, if I will ever 'grow up' for her, or will I always remain her 'Little Girl'

Quotable Quotes-2

"Maturiy comes from selfless understanding.NO ONE is perfect, come to terms with that first. You are NOT the only one having a hard time. Drill that into your head."

--My Younger Brother, taking his chance to advice me.

Mad Monkey Mind

I am sure a lot of you will get confused...

Life is a never ending learning process. Every step, every move has a meaning behind it, a reason for happening.Always for the Best!
Being a strong believer in this statement, everytime I feel 'lost', I repeat this to myself.

But how often does it happen that we look back wondering "Was it worth it?"
I know there have been some times in my life when I wonder so, with respect to not just myself but others also.

Caught between over optimism and self doubt, my mind races around like a mad monkey sometimes.

I have heard people tell me this "Dont Assume becos it makes an ASS of U and ME"
I have often reminded myself not to do so either. Best to simply open your mouth and clarify. But then people's mentality is quite strange. If you say it, you are wrong and if you dont, you are still wrong. I have been told I am very 'forthright' or 'too honest with my thoughts', 'frank and outspoken' . Why? Because I spoke my mind rather than keep it in my head and let the mad monkey run around.

Understanding Bharatnatyam...

I know everyone has a different perspective of dance, but to me this is what dance is about.

There are so many aspects to Bharatnatyam; it takes more than just mere reading to understand what each signifies. As a child, to me Bharatnatyam was synonymous with simply dance and any form of dance was ‘fun’. Today, as I discover more about this ‘dance’, I come 1 step closer to understanding its true grandeur.

But how can dance be more than just dance? be passion, emotions, expression? A pathway and connection to God? You must be joking.

Maybe not.

The dancer on stage depicts from Gods to slaves, devotees to villains, feeling not from her face but expressing from deep within her heart. She feels the pain of each character, the excitement of the victory, the anger of the asuras and the shame of the villain. She is the embodiment of the divine and yet she is scornful evil mind. How can she do it if she isn’t passionate about it?

To be one with God, you need to be God, the dancer gets the delightful opportunity to feel close to God every time she enacts a celestial character or a God/Goddess’ story. She feels God in her, she transforms into God on stage.

Dancing requires a lot of physical discipline, control of the body and balance, at the same time co-ordination of the hand, eyes, foot and neck. Be it whichever form of dance, classical or otherwise, if any of this is not developed, the dance will lose its grace and charm, the dancer comes across as sloppy. It’s a discipline of the mind, because it involves concentration, creativity and a constant thirst for learning.

21 years of dancing, but I am only a 5-year-old dancer because I started realizing its value and magnificence only 5 years ago. The more I understand Bharatnatyam, I mature as a dancer as does my dancing. Yet, there is so much yet to know and understand.

Performance Blues

As the date of her next performance nears, she suddenly feels so panicked that she has so much left to finish. The costumes are not ready, the accessories not bought, the dance needs to be perfected, there is no make-up kit but has no time for any of this.

In between working 12 hrs/7 days, dance classes nearly everyday and trying to complete a publication for review by the National Arts Council, she seems to have no time left. All she seems to be able to do is crib :(

I think she has poor time management and did not plan ahead properly. But then even if there was 48 hours in a day, I dont think it will be enough for her.

The expert has spoken...

Below are a series of quotes by famous people, people who were considered 'experts' in their fields, and their opinions on certain issues. It is interesting to note how a lot of possible ideas were initially dismissed by the 'experts' before some paradigm shifter came along.

Studies have shown this is primarily because of pride and a staunch belif that if something had been possible then THEY themselves would have thought of it, since they didnt, its not possible.Nearly all of them have been proven otherwise.
